Build, buy or license: three ways to own a technology today
In-house R&D is slow, acquisitions are expensive, and licensing is underused. How to choose the right path to ownership for your business.
Once you know what you need to own, there are three ways to get it: develop it yourself, buy the company or asset that has it, or license it from whoever does.
Building gives you full control and the deepest know-how, but it takes years and the outcome is uncertain. It makes sense when the capability is core to your business and nothing suitable exists yet.
Buying is faster but costly. You pay for the team, the product and often a lot you do not need. It suits cases where the technology is already proven in the market and the price of waiting is high.
Licensing sits between the two, and in India it is badly underused. Universities, CSIR laboratories and research institutes hold patented technologies developed with years of public funding, many of them without a licensee. An exclusive licence can give you the same protection as owning the patent, for a fraction of the cost of building or buying.
The deciding questions are time, certainty and control. How soon do you need it? How proven is it? How much of it must be yours alone? A technology readiness assessment and a clear view of the patent position answer most of these before you commit.
